Last
week Gordon Brown raised the duty on beer and wine in his annual budget,
but here at The Fox we don't do everything we're told. We won't be
asking you to pay more tax, not just yet.
Earlier in the year,
the manufacturers raised the prices of lager, cider and Guinness, as
well as putting up the price of Coke and other soft drinks. But
here at The Fox, we have not raised the price you pay at the pump.
In fact, we are holding
the prices on all our alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks
until 1 May, when Greene King raises the wholesale price of its bitter.
Until then, you will save up to fifteen
pence on each drink you buy at The Fox.
Just another reason for
visiting The Fox this spring.
15 March 2006
From Scotland and Ireland in the fifteenth century to the United States and Canada
during Colonial times, and to the rest of the world as its popularity
grew, whisky (or "The Water of Life") has become a popular
drink for
any occasion. From today you can sample some of the best that
Scotland has to offer as we launch a range of five single malt
whiskies to complement our more familiar blended brands.
Dalwhinnie
15 Year Old
Dalwhinnie, the highest
distillery in Scotland stands in an area steeped in history. The name
itself means 'meeting place', where cattle drovers and smugglers met on
their way to markets in the south. The distillery was originally
named Strathspey when it was established during the whisky boom of the
late 1890s by two men from Kingussie.
The Dalwhinnie 15 Year
Old is a light to medium intensity single malt, with flavours of orange
juice and some grainy mustard. When diluted, it becomes more
aromatic and mellow, with scents of daffodils and chicken-corn.
Glenmorangie
10 Year Old
It has been called ‘the
perfect ten’ and most Glenmorangie drinkers will readily drink to that!
After 10 years in ex-Bourbon casks, the Glenmorangie spirit has had
enough time to mature and mellow into a beautifully balanced yet
marvellously complex malt whisky.
The fragrance is light
and delicate, floral rather than cereal, with perhaps a light smokiness
of mandarin and
vanilla. This is a malt with an overall
impression which is refined and fresh; indeed, Glenmorangie 10 Year Old
is Scotland's favourite single malt whisky.
Highland Park 12 Year Old
Founded
in 1798, Highland Park is Britain's most northerly
whisky distillery. In the unforgiving Orkney
Islands off the North coast of Scotland, with gale force
winds, crashing waves and rain every other day,
distilling whisky is a challenge. With the long
list of accolades and awards for each of its single
malts, Highland Park distillery proves that the struggle
is well worth it.
Made from the best barley malted over burning peat from the
distillery-owned Hobbister Moor, merged with waters from the Cattie Maggie spring,
it is aged in casks for a minimum of
twelve years that shape its rare and very distinctive character.
Highland Park 12 Year Old has a rounded smoky sweetness that Which?
magazine described as "the best buy amongst single malt whiskies".
Laphroaig
10 Year Old
Laphroaig 10 Year Old
is an all-malt Scotch Whisky from the remote island of Islay in the
Western Isles of Scotland. Laphroaig, pronounced "La-froyg", is a Gaelic
word meaning "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay".
In making Laphroaig,
malted barley is dried over a peat fire. The smoke from this peat, found
only on Islay, gives Laphroaig its particularly rich flavour.
Laphroaig is best
savoured neat, or with a little cool water. Roll it around on your
tongue. Release the pungent, earthy aroma of blue peat smoke, the sweet
nuttiness of the barley, the delicate heathery perfume of Islay's
streams. It is as unique as the island itself.
The
Macallan 10 Year Old
For 300 years Easter
Elchies House has stood on the banks of the Spey as a symbol of Scottish
fortitude. The name Macallan itself is a very old one, which can
be traced as far back as the time of the introduction of the Christian
faith into Scotland.
The Macallan 10 Year
Old is matured exclusively in oak sherry casks from Spain to deliver a
deep, rich, deliciously smooth and well-rounded flavour with a slight
sweetness and touch of sherry and wood. Its deep colour is achieved
wholly naturally without the addition of any colouring. It has
been described as fully developed, with hints of vanilla, raisins,
spices and lots of esters. "No need to say more, a lovely whisky."
14 March 2006
Our current guest ale
is Smiles Heritage West Country Ale, a full-bodied cask-conditioned beer
at 5.2% abv. Dark ruby in colour with a roast malt character and
fruity aroma, the crystal and chocolate malts used in brewing Heritage
are balanced with the use of Fuggles and Styrian Golding hops to produce
a pronounced roast malt flavour.
The Smiles Brewing
Company in Bristol was founded to brew traditional ales using only
the finest ingredients. Throughout the process they only use water,
malted barley, hops and yeast. No artificial colours, flavours or
preservatives are added, ensuring fresh natural beer.
7 March 2006
In
addition to our regular brands,
we also offer Greene King's seasonal ales, as well as guest ales from
other brewers.
Our current guest ale
is Titanic White Star from the Titanic Brewery in Stoke-on-Trent.
White Star is a light refreshingly distinctive hoppy beer with a
freshness that belies its strength.
It is so easy to drink
it will fool all but the crustiest of sea dogs. (Anyone who says
it will go down nicely will be ejected from the bar!)
