30 June 2006
At about this time each
year we review and revise our a la carte restaurant menu, removing the
least popular dishes and replacing them with exciting new offerings.
This year, we have taken the opportunity to make a number of small
revisions to our bar menu at the same time. The new dishes will be
available from Monday 3 July, so what can you expect to see on the menu?
Restaurant Menu
For the past few weeks
we have been offering Smoked Salmon Salad as a starter with our
traditional
Sunday roast lunches, and it has proved so popular that we
have decided to make it available on our restaurant menu too.
Scottish smoked salmon served with a mixed salad and wholemeal bread and
butter is an ideal way to start dinner, leaving room for one of our
filling main courses.
Our Slow-braised Shank
of Lamb has always been popular for those with a big appetite, and now
it is cooked in a red wine and rosemary gravy and served on mashed
potato with fresh vegetables.
As well as lamb shank,
we now offer Pork Hock in Honey and Mustard sauce. Served on
wholegrain mustard mash with seasonal vegetables, it will appeal to
those who like a bit of bite to their main course.
For fish lovers, we
have Poached Salmon Fillet served with a creamy white wine and
watercress sauce, and we haven't forgotten those who prefer a vegetarian
diet either, as we've included Mediterranean Vegetable Cannelloni; three
tubes of pasta filled with Mediterranean vegetables, red pesto and
ricotta cheese, served in a creamy cheese sauce and accompanied by
garlic bread.
You can download a copy
of the full restaurant menu
here.
Bar Menu
You'll find the
Mediterranean Vegetable Cannelloni on our bar menu too. We also
have a new curry dish to whet your appetite: Chicken Tikka Masala made
with pieces of tender chicken breast marinated in tikka spices and
cooked with onions and coriander in a cream and yoghurt sauce. Our
new curry is served with rice and poppadums.
Another spicy dish new
to the menu is Mexican Beef Chilli, a spicy hot meal made with red and
green peppers and jalapeno peppers to give it that extra bite.
We have new fishcakes
on the menu too: Smoked Haddock and Mozzarella Fishcakes made with lemon
grass and spring onions for extra flavour in this lighter dish.
You can download a copy
of the full bar menu here.
Luxury Ice Cream
Sundaes
New to both menus are our new luxury ice cream sundaes, not the pre-packed sundaes you find in many pubs but sundaes made here at The
Fox. There are three flavours to choose from, all made with luxury
farmhouse ice creams: Strawberry with real pieces of strawberry;
Chocolate with chunks of Belgian chocolate; and Toffee with pieces of
Devon toffee. A perfect end to a meal on a hot summer's day.
Children's Menu
Finally, we shall be
launching our new children's menu in the next couple of weeks, so check
back to our news page
to see what we'll have on offer for our younger customers this summer.

Here
at The Fox, in return for your support we run a
Loyalty Card Scheme.
Each month we make a money-saving offer that is only available to
loyalty card holders.
Throughout July we are
offering you forty pence off a pint of lager. That's right, you
can have a pint of our new Buweiser Budvar draught lager for the same
price as a pint of Fosters - that's a saving of 40p on the usual price
of Budvar.
Budvar
is the original Czech lager of the Budweiser name, with a long history peppered more
recently with legal battles against Anheuser-Busch, the American
corporation responsible for a lager of a similar name you may have heard
of!
Let's not beat around
the Anheuser-Busch (ouch!), the Czech Budweiser is a far more drinkable
lager than its pale American imitator. With a brewing tradition
that goes back 700 years, Budvar has a period of 90 days for its
full-bodied flavour to mature. Brewed to 5% abv,
Budvar is packaged in the Czech Republic before shipping to the UK, so
you know that you are getting the genuine flavour.
Joining the loyalty scheme is
easy: complete the very short application form
available from the bar, hand it to the bar staff, and you can begin
using your card immediately.

We
are pleased to announce that our new toilets are now open for business!
After just three weeks'
work, Beard Construction has handed our toilets back to us three days
ahead of schedule, and we're pleased to say that they are everything we
hoped they would be.
You'll see from the
photographs that everything has been replaced. The worn lino on
the floors has gone, replaced with new quarry tiles in both ladies and
gents; all the white sanitaryware has been replaced with new items, and
there are new hand basins too.
All the walls, ceilings
and woodwork have been repainted, and new wooden panelling has been
installed and stained dark oak. New wall tiles have been fitted,
and we've installed new lights, giving the toilets a much brighter look
and
feel.
You'll find new toilet
roll holders, new soap dispensers, and there are even new hand-dryers
that actually blow warm air now!
We've fitted new
extraction fans and new air fresheners. There are even fresh cut
flowers in the ladies. If we've forgotten anything, please let us
know.
It may seem ridiculous
to make such a fuss over a new set of toilets, but those of you who
remember the old ones will understand how much these new facilities mean
to us here at The Fox. Thank you for your co-operation while the
work was going on, and we hope you'll be as impressed as we are with our
new facilities.
Work continues on
redecorating the bar. The rising damp in the external walls was
found to be far worse than was first thought, so this refurbishment work
is taking longer than expected. We hope to be able to re-open the
non-smoking area of the bar in time for our
Senior Citizens' Lunchtime Special this
Tuesday, but redecoration work throughout the bar will continue for some
time to come. Rest assured that when it's completed we'll have a bar as smart as our flash
new toilets, so again we'd like to thank you for your continued
patience as we work to improve The Fox for you.

We

In
addition to our regular brands,
we also offer Greene King's seasonal ales, as well as guest ales from
other brewers, and over the past two years we have offered more than
twenty
beers for our customers to choose from.
Our current guest ale
is Tolly Original, a rich and smooth full-bodied ale brewed to 3.8% abv,
with a distinctive balance of malts and ripe fruit flavours and just a
hint of sweetness.
Sunday 18 June is Fathers' Day, and as always we are offering a full
traditional Sunday roast lunch. But in addition, we are giving
away a special gift to every dad who has lunch with us on that day.
Every father will receive a free bottle of Strongbow Sirrus and a Sirrus
glass either to enjoy with their meal or to take home and enjoy in their
garden.
To reserve your table
and treat your father to a special lunch, call us on 01235 821228.
We look forward to seeing you.

If you have visited us
this week, you will have noticed that we have the builders in. In
the two years I've been at The Fox, we have made many significant
improvements to the service we offer, with
new menus, new
guest ales,
new garden furniture, and what I believe is a greater interest in your
comfort and enjoyment when you are with us. But the one aspect of
the pub that I've so far been unable to improve has been the decor.
After much discussion
with the brewery, I have finally managed to get work started on
improving the facilities and furnishings we offer you. We are open
for business as usual, so over the
next four weeks you will see many changes going on around you. Here
are details of what we are doing to improve your local.
The work is split into
two projects. The first is to cure the rising damp in the external
walls. This will mean re-plastering and redecorating the inside of
the pub - and not just the external walls; all the walls and ceilings in
the bar area will be redecorated, brightening up the bar and doing away
with the peeling and stained wallpaper at last.
The last time the pub
was decorated was before I first discovered The Fox, and that was in
1992, so it's probably safe to say that this is the first redecoration
that has taken place since the 1980s! It had been long overdue
when I bought The Fox two years ago, and I'm very pleased that we are
finally able to get the work done. Don't worry, though, we're not
"doing an IKEA" on it. We've deliberately chosen a colour scheme
that will retain the original charm of The Fox, so you won't find acres of stainless
steel and brushed aluminium adorning the bar.
The second project will
rip out our twenty-year-old toilets and provide you with new facilities
that recognise the fact that we are in the twenty-first century.
Everything is being changed, right back to the floorboards and the
plaster. New wash basins, new toilets, quarry floor tiles, new
hand dryers - in fact, new everything. Having listened to your
comments, I know that this is one area of the pub where you will welcome
the improvements.
The builders are being
very considerate of our customers' comfort while they are working, but
may I apologise for any inconveniences while the work is going on;
fortunately, I won't need to make any apologies for our conveniences
once the work has finished!
