Guest Ales ...

... are a popular feature at The Fox, offering drinkers a wide variety of our seasonal beers, as well as cask ales from other brewers.

Our current guest ale was originally brewed by the Morland brewery in Abingdon and has been revived by the current owners, Greene King.  Tanner's Jack, brewed to 4.4% ABV, is a soft reddish brown ale with a nutty, malty palette, background sweetness and a smooth finish.

Previous Guest Ales
Over the past four years we have given our customers more than thirty different beers to choose from.  Here's a selection:

Bath Ales Gem is an exceptional bitter brewed to 4.1% ABV using floor-malted Maris Otter barley and Goldings hops.  Gem has a rich aroma of malt and hops, with a long, deep bitter-sweet finish.

Brewed to 4.5% ABV, Morland's Old Speckled Hen has a superb rich malty and fruity aroma. When tasting it you experience a wonderful warming flavour that is bursting with body. Originally brewed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, it was named after an old factory run-around known locally as the "owd speckled 'un".

Jekyll's Gold is an outstanding premium ale.  Brewed to 4.3% ABV by the Hydes brewery in Manchester, it is pale blonde in colour with a bright citrus taste.

Greene King's Fireside is ruby in colour, with a robust and refreshing taste, Fireside's citrus hops leave a mellow, fruity linger on the palate.  It is a full-bodied mature English ale brewed to 4.5% ABV by volume, and late-hopped for a malty, fruity flavour.  A great winter warmer.

Old Hooky (4.6% ABV) from the Hook Norton brewery, is a beautifully balanced beer, fruity by nature, with a well-rounded body and an echo of Crystal Malt.  A medium ruby in colour, it has a very distinctive nose with hints of clove and cinnamon and a lovely cherry fruit character. It's a creamy-textured beer that stays quite sweet in the mouth, making it an easy-drinking beer.

Davenport's Original is a classic copper-coloured, full-bodied ale with a palate rich in malt and fruit, balanced by a satisfying bitter finish.  Brewed to 4.0% ABV, Davenport's is a session beer new to The Fox, so come on down and try something different in 2008!

Not surprisingly a seasonal beer brewed to coincide with Christmas, Hardy and Hanson's Rocking Rudolph is full-bodied and close to over flowing with festive cheer.  At 5.0% ABV, it is a well loved ale reminding you of Christmas pudding in a glass.

Greene King's Abbot Reserve is a full-bodied, mature English ale, late-hopped for a mellow fruity flavour, It is brewed to 6.5% ABV, so be warned that each pint packs one hell of a punch.

Bomber County is a special dark red beer brewed to 4.8% ABV, and has the dry hoppy characteristics of all Highwood Brewery Beers.

Greene King Swing Low is an aromatic ale with a refreshing bitter finish created to celebrate England's defence of the World Rugby Union Cup in 2007.  It's an ale well worth a try (sorry!)

A light, clean and refreshing ale brewed especially to celebrate the Six Nations rugby championships, Belhaven Six Nations is a golden ale "delivers a bitter-dry hop explosion that'll have your taste buds tingling".

A superb strong bitter at 4.8 ABV, Batemans XXXB has a complex palate consisting of a delicate aroma of hops delightfully balanced by a prominent malty character.  A five-times winner of the 'Premium Beer of the Year' at CAMRA's Great British Beer Festival, XXXB is a full-bodied ale ideal for the cold winter months.

At 4.3 ABV, the rich full flavour of Hardy and Hanson's Olde Trip comes from it being brewed using the finest quality Challenger dry hops to produce a beer that is both rich and drinkable.  Full of character, this premium ale has all the qualities you would expect of a traditional bitter from one of England's oldest brewers.

Taking its name from Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem Inn nestling at the foot of Nottingham Castle, Olde Trip Ale truly is 'the real ale with the real tale'.  Legend has it that the inn was where knights, rallying to the call of King Richard, stopped off for 'one for the road' on their way to the Holy Land to join the Third Crusade.  Fortunately, Olde Trip isn't just reserved for crusaders and was much appreciated when we had it as our guest at The Fox Inn.

Brewed in a time-honoured manner using the finest hops and premium malted barley, Ruddles County has a distinctive flavour and traditional English character, with an inviting aroma of soft fruits and light hops.

Released to celebrate England's appearance in the 2006 World Cup, Greene King Striker had a rich and fruity aroma with a late hop kick.  With a balanced blend of hoppy citrus and bitter flavours that provided a surprisingly full body and clean finish, Striker was brewed to 3.7% ABV, and was the perfect pint with which to toast England's adventures in Germany.

Ridley's Prospect is a 4.1% rich golden cask ale with a light floral aroma that balances a fresh, clean bitterness with a slightly sweet hop flavour - just the beer for a warm early summer evening in our beer garden.

Titanic White Star from the Titanic Brewery in Stoke-on-Trent is a light refreshingly distinctive hoppy beer with a freshness that belies its strength.

The Reverend James is full bodied and warming, rich in palate, spicy and aromatic with a deeply satisfying finish.  Brewed to 4.5% ABV, this premium ale has been described as having a classic flavour not commonly available these days.

The roots of The Reverend James trace back to 1767, when, under the ownership of Henry Child, a prominent Methodist, the Buckleys Brewery began to brew beer in Llanelli. The Reverend James Buckley later took on the serious development of the brewery after his marriage to Child's daughter, Maria.  A traditional centuries old recipe is followed to brew this premium ale, now proving to be a highly desirable guest throughout the UK, and we're sure our customers will approve.

Roasted crystal malt creates this rich ruby coloured ale, Ridley's Rumpus is brewed to 4.5% ABV.  It has a sweet nutty flavour perfectly complemented by a light bitter aftertaste.

The Smiles Brewing Company in Bristol was founded to brew traditional ales using only the finest ingredients. Throughout the process they only use water, malted barley, hops and yeast. No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives are added, ensuring fresh natural beer.
